What Blurb Shows Up in Google?

Google "Parenting For a Better World". Many websites come up, but all of them are showing up because they posted an article entitled "Parenting For a Better World" by Jim Sevy. The thing that's interesting is that each website shows a different blurb in Google. Take a look at the page source for each of the websites on page 1 of the Google results for this search and see if you can find out why this is. If you can find out why, then you can use that knowledge to structure your posts to show what you want to show in Google.

Note: I originally ran this search because I wanted to delete this article from a website and a blog where I had posted it some time ago. I decided not to delete it from OCSitters.net because it was already indexed. I did delete it from SoCASittersUnlimited because it wasn't indexed there.

Since I must leave the post on OCSitters.net, I want to tweak it so that it works in my favor, instead of just giving a backlink to Sevy's site. If you have any ideas off the top of your head, let me know, but I'll be thinking about it also and will work on it when I get to working on the OCSitters.net site.

How to Earn Money With HubPages - Part 1

This is from HubPages guide - the section on how a writer earns money from their Hub. In a nutshell, there are 4 ways to earn money, HubPages takes 40% and you earn 60%. I'm referencing it because while you may not choose to give HubPages 40% of your earnings, it's a good list of the four easiest ways to monetize any of your blogs.

I was a little confused about how to set up a Hub as I posted one post and left it alone for a couple of days. When I checked back there was a notice that I was in danger of being flagged for incomplete content. Since I considered my one little post to be complete I wasn't sure exactly what HubPages expected from me. This page from the HubPages Guide answers that question.

SEO Zombie

Justin at SEO zombie is a friend of Grizzly's with some great material. More in-depth than Grizzly Make Money Online For Beginners but still easy to understand. I haven't even begun to plumb the depths of his site but I'm excited to dig further into the zombie (:

Resources from Grizzly - Lots of Great Links

Grizzly's Link Resource

Delete Posts From Your Blog - DON'T

From Grizzly: Google does not look kindly on sites which delete posts.

From American Nanny: if I have a post that I want to delete, instead of deleting it, I change the content. I would imagine that you could even change the title and tags if you wanted without getting on Google's bad side, however, why lose the link juice. If you want to change a post, try to keep it on the same topic, using the same keywords.

How to Get .EDU and .GOV Backlinks

Conventional wisdom states that Google gives more weight to sites that have incoming links from .edu (education) and .gov (government) domains when compiling its page ranking.

Finding .edu and .gov websites.
Do a Google search using the term .edu or .gov. Now you need to find the ones that have blogs and then you need to find the blogs that allow comments.

Find .EDU and .GOV backlinks based on the typical URL structure of the most popular blog management software (i.e. Wordpress):

The following queries target .EDU and .GOV domains hosting the main wordpress login file “wp-login.php” or the Wordpress admin path “/wp-admin/”. This simply means that the domain hosts a blog. These queries will take you to the Wordpress login page - don't panic as you just simply click the link that points back to the blog's homepage - you don't have to login to post comments. (some sites will make you login - skip them and search for those that don't)

* site:.edu inurl:wp-login.php +blog
* site:.gov inurl:wp-login.php +blog
* site:.edu inurl:”wp-admin” +login

Search for .EDU and .GOV backlinks based on textual keyword combinations that are typically found on blogs:

These 3 Google search queries take you directly to the main blog pages by searching for .EDU and .GOV domains containing the keyword terms “no comments” and “blogroll” which are keywords commonly found on blogs. You can always mess around with different sets of the keywords for additional search results. The "keywords" are enclosed with the (") quotation symbol.

* site:.edu “no comments” +blogroll -”posting closed” -”you must be logged in” -”comments are closed”
* site:.gov “no comments” +blogroll -”posting closed” -”you must be logged in” -”comments are closed”
* inurl:(edu|gov) “no comments” +blogroll -”posting closed” -”you must be logged in” -”comments are closed”

One more method of querying Google but it does limit the results by requiring the URL to contain the term "blog". It does have an advantage though in that it allows you to filter your searches by using the trailing "keyword" in the query. For example you can put a date like "2007" in the trailing "keyword" location and this will eliminate older inactive blogs from being listed in the SERP's. You can use this trailing keyword for specifying "country" or "city" or "university" etc. Basically you can narrow your searches however you like.

site:.edu inurl:blog “comment” -”you must be logged in” -”posting closed” -”comment closed” “keyword”

Substitute whatever keyword you like between the trailing "keyword" quotation.

The Work

You will have to visit each of these blogs and when comments are accepted you then proceed to leave your words of wisdom.

Comments are moderated so you will have to leave a relevant comment about the subject matter if you want your comment to be posted. If your comment is relevant they will be happy to accept it.

Your Anchor Text.
To post a comment you have to give your name, email address and website URL. This is perfect as your "name" gets hypertexted and points to your website or blog using the URL that you give. If you use your name (or any name) then this becomes your anchor text and Google will index you accordingly. If you use the name "paul" then your backlink will point to your site and Google will rank you high in the SERP's for "Paul".

This is not what you want. The name you use should be one of the keywords you want your site ranked for in the SERP's.

This can be tricky as you don't want to be to obvious, ie using "how to make money online" as your name. Sometimes it is better to target secondary keywords like "SEO Tips" or "backlinks" or "work at home mom" as your "name". Ultimately you want the EDU or GOV backlink first and foremost but it should have an anchor text that will benefit you more than a regular name would.

Some "names" will automatically be flagged as spam and your comment will never reach the moderator. Keywords like "free" "sex" "money" etc should never be used. Black hat methods are time consuming and involve a lot of trial and error. Normally you should stay clear as the rewards are usually not worth all the effort or at best are short lived. Getting a few optimized backlinks from EDU and GOV domains are the exception as I have found that these backlinks can propel your site to the top of the SERP's quickly. If you try this then I caution you to take your time and find the right blogs (relevant to your keyword) and spend some time creating a comment that will get posted. Don't just start spamming every blog you come across - even if successful Google will notice that you suddenly have a ton of new backlinks from all sorts of unrelated sites and most likely penalize you. Always remember that backlinks should appear natural - one or two EDU or GOV backlinks a week is plenty but be sure they are from relevant blogs.

How to Turn Traffic Into Money

Excerpt from Grizzly's "Make Money Online for Beginners: Lesson 4":

How to turn Traffic into Money

My make money blog is not set up to market products and as a result the "Project Payday" traffic is not earning me anything. I'm not an affiliate of "Project Payday" so people who read my review and sign up will not benefit me in any way. However my "make Money" blog is set up for other purposes which I will discuss later. I do have several other blogs that are optimized for selling products and I have got most of them listed on page 1 of Google as well. These blogs only do one thing. Sell the product. Google sends the traffic for free. I post 1 article a week to each of them and other than that they are forgotten. I spend my time creating new blogs and repeating the process over and over again. They don't all make money everyday but everyday some of them do. Combined they are averaging $106 a day. This might not seem like much to you but that's $3000 a month and my expenses are ZERO. Think on that before you say that you don't want to do the work.

Now that I have shown you the basics of setting up your blog let's discuss making some money with it.

Step 1.

Find a niche that will make money. This is all important as some niches are ready made for people who want to spend money and other niches won't produce enough cash for a cup of coffee.

Before running a keyword search you have to ask yourself what kinds of things people are willing to spend money on online. Music, electronics, books, travel, how to stuff, get rich quick stuff, personal development products and shoes all come to mind without thinking very hard. There are, of course, a lot more profitable niches than this.

The point is don't pick a niche that doesn't have an associated product or ebook that can be sold on it. You also want to be sure that there are adword advertisers for your niche.

One of the first websites I set up is about Betta Fish. It's a nice site with lots of info related to Bettas. After doing all the work and incurring the expenses involved in a website, I found out that there wasn't a lot of products that could be easily sold on the net for Betta fish. There were lots of adword advertisers though and I thought I would make some money from that at least. Wrong!

One of the ironies of setting up a good informative site is that if you do too good of a job people will stay on your site and read something that they came looking for. Then leave. This is fine if you have something to sell. I, unfortunately don't. This is when I started to think that I was providing to much info. To test this, I set up a series of free blogs on Betta fish but this time I put crap on the sites. (Yes I admit it) I still used all the right keywords so that they are optimized for the SERP's (Search Engine Results Pages) but now when traffic shows up they depart in a hurry. Usually they just close the page but a number of people click my ads. Bingo - I get more ad revenue from the crappy blogs than I do from the real website. This seems to work rather well with certain niches like pets. People are attached to their pets and when they need info they are determined to find it. The blogs are useless to them but when they see the ads, which appear to have the answers they need, it's easier to click the ad than do another Google search.

I am not saying that this is right or ethical. I am saying that people who make money with adsense use these techniques. As I have said before, no one in the business likes to admit this and they certainly don't divulge this to beginners.

Note: If you have been sucked into enough programs that promise to make you rich you start to realize that most of these programs give you just enough info to get you started but always seem to leave out the key ingredient. All the programs available that promise to show you how to make money with adsense are exactly like this. They tell you how to optimize your site, how to research keywords, how to find traffic and a few other details - everything in fact that you need to know to make money from adsense. And you will - maybe $1 a day. They don't tell you that you will need hundreds of sites to make any real money. Then again maybe they do but it's between the lines. The "lines" in this case would be the software that they flog. Stuff that generates unique content articles, programs that upload content to your sites automatically, automated forum posting, automated directory posting, automated guestbook posting, automated blog builders, automated website builders and the list goes on.

Why do you need automated software for anything? Because it's all about the numbers. To make money you need to create lots and lots of sites and you can't do this manually. Automated programs are spam programs - in the loose sense of the word. Spamming means many things and spam blogs are included in the definition.

I have received a number of emails asking me for info on these programs. I have been reluctant to tell you for a number of reasons. First, you need to know how to set up a "real" blog properly before you start duplicating it. Second I fear you will start down the spam path without knowing what your doing and spend a small fortune in the process. Thirdly, on a personal level, I have corresponded with many of you and realize that there are real people reading this and I like them, hence my conscience is weighing in on this. It's one thing to sell stuff to anonymous people who happen to find your site but it's harder when you know the people on the other end.

A few facts.

- most of the available software - while effective - requires some or a lot of knowledge about various aspects of computers, codes, operating systems, html, php, java script etc. Most beginners don't have the ability to work through this stuff and the producers of this type of software don't tell you about all the "bugs" and "fixes" needed to run the software before you buy it.

- every program I have used to date has "bugs". Most developers will issue fixes and updates as they get them but the fact is all software has bugs (Windows XP had hundreds when released) and this can't be helped as there are so many different computer setups that programmers can't take everyone in to account when building the program. They tend to build it for the most common applications .ie. Windows XP, 32 bit etc. In this instance a Mac user may have problems.

- this stuff is expensive.

- if you don't use the programs properly you will leave a spam footprint a mile wide that Google, among others, will see and at best your sites will get dropped and at worst you will be banned from adsense.

That said I will give you a list of some of the more popular software but without any links. That way I receive no affiliate fees and my conscience is clean if you pursue this avenue.

VooDoo Blogger - this program is designed to create thousands of crappy blogs. Has bugs but there is support given. This is a notorious spam program that doesn't make any bones about what it's for.

RSStoBlog - this is a legitimate program used to post content feeds automatically to your blog. Nothing wrong with this as lots of people use it to keep their sites up to date with fresh content. As with most automated software it can also be used to send content to all the spam blogs as well.

Forum Equalizer - this is simply a spamming program that lets you post messages on thousands of forums in order to leave a backlink to your site(s).

Guest Book Equalizer - same as the forum equalizer but you send posts to guest books instead. (leaving your backlink)

The following are not spamming software per se but can be used in conjunction with these other programs.

Article content generation software. There are too many to mention by name but they all do the same thing. (Google "Article Content Generation" for a list) They take articles that have already been written and change enough words and phrases to make it unique and then produce hundreds or thousands of unique variations of the same article. These can then be posted to thousands of blogs using RsstoBlog or a similar program.

I admit to using one of these programs but I only use articles that I write. This is to be certain that I don't get nailed for copyright infringement. If you don't set enough variables in the content generation program you could effectively produce an article that is only slightly different from the original and be guilty of stealing someone else's work. Be careful of this - I strongly suggest that you write your own articles. By the way there is no program that can create a readable article from scratch so beware any that advertise as such.

Article Submission Software - this allows you to automatically submit your articles to hundreds of directories. (a very time consuming process if done manually) You can Google this phrase for a list of available products. A word of caution - make sure your articles are well written before you submit them as most directories review articles before inclusion. Humans can tell if your article has been produced by spamming software and you won't get them posted.

Before spending a lot of money on this stuff I have put a link on the site to a program called "The OTO GoldMine". I came across this site in my travels and it seemed to be an ideal choice for beginners. You can join for free and make money by selling the products listed on the site with nothing more than an affiliate link. This is no different than other affiliate programs except that the product list here is as huge as any I've seen and has several very useful products. I also want to point out that they will try and sell you all these products when you sign up. The cost is $67. I mention this because a lot of the products in the list do the things I have just been describing - content generation software, blog submission et al. The price is astoundingly cheap for this kind of software that would cost hundreds of $ individually. (dam - that's sounds like a sales pitch and I don't want it to... old habits I guess)

What I am trying to say is that if you are going to invest in this stuff anyway then save yourself a lot of money and get it from this site. You can learn how to use the stuff and see if it is for you for a paltry sum in comparison to what you will spend searching for this separately. Anyway, whether you buy buy the products or not you should join for free and take advantage of the huge collection of products that you can promote on your site(s) and you only need one affiliate link. The nice thing about this is that they do all the selling - you just send them traffic and collect commissions.

This also applies to "The Ultimate Supertip" and "$7 Dollar Secrets" and the other programs I've listed before. These are ideal for beginners as they will sell faster and easier than most products. Why? They are cheap and they are easy to build a blog around. Optimize each blog as I have outlined previously using each program's name as your keyword. Write an article or two about each one and post them on your blog. Create a different set of articles for submission to the article directories like GoArticles.com and then move on to your next blog and product. Remember the more articles you submit the more backlinks you will get and the sooner you will get indexed in Google. It took me a month to get to number 1 for "project payday" and if I was selling that program I would be making money from it already from the free traffic Google is sending to my site. Is one month too long to wait? I am making money from all the sites I use to sell products and everyone of them gets free traffic and cost me nothing to produce.

Once you have enough sites up and running the money will start adding up. You may only make a few dollars at first but you will be surprised at how it will multiply in six months from now.

Getting Your Blog Indexed.

Excerpt from Grizzly's Make Money Online For Beginners: Lesson 3:

There is no better way to get your site indexed and ranked by Google than writing articles.

Here's a list of the most popular Article Submission Directories. The more articles and more directories you use the faster you will get ranked and indexed by Google.

Technorati
Go to Technorati and create an account. Log in and "Claim your Blog". Later you will ping technorati each time you post something and they will come and crawl your site for the new content.

Google, Yahoo, Msn, Technorati and Digg are all you really need to be indexed in.

Technorati will get you traffic but you have to give the proper "Tags" (keywords) for your site. If you are looking for posts using the tag "make money" you will get a list of articles starting with those posted a few minutes ago and working back in time. This is very important and you can generate your own traffic because of this. Note: The Labels in Blogger serve as Technorati "Tags".

That's it for this lesson. Go and get acquainted with Technorati. Claim your blog and play around with TAG searches. Get to know what this directory does as they will make you some decent money once you understand how to use it. As always if you have questions just send me an email.

Dictionary of Common Blogging & SEO Terms

Excerpt from Grizzly's post "Make Money Online: Lesson 2":

Indexing - Query the search engine using your URL address - if they find your site then you have been indexed.

Page Content.
You will get indexed fast if you use original material on your blog. If you copy and paste content found elsewhere on the Internet you won't get indexed very fast and usually not at all.

Keywords
If you are starting a blog that sells Ugg Boots then you had better make sure that the search engines know what your site is about. This is done by using your prime Keywords in your page titles, post titles and sprinkled a few times in your articles. Beware that using your keywords too many times will get you into trouble as Google will see your site as a spam blog. The rule of thumb is that you don't want to use your keyword more than 2 or 3 times per one hundred words.

Back Links
The back links that count must come from a site that's relevant to your topic. If your site is about "Dog Grooming" then links from pet sites and animal care sites are great. If you have links from a site like mine then Google will ignore the links because my site is in no way relevant to dog grooming.

The page rank of the sites giving you links is very important. If you get 1 hundred links from pet stores to your dog grooming site but all the incoming links are from sites with o page rank then you might get a ranking of 1 or 2. If you get half a dozen links from relevant sites that have a page ranks of 5 or higher then you will end up being ranked a 4 or 5. If you can get a link from a page rank 7 or higher you will vault up the rankings quickly and the age of your site will not matter.

Warning: You can get thousands of links from sites that have no relevance to your site and this won't help you much. I mention this to caution you against using link exchanges or link farms. These types of links worked in the past but no longer as Google ignores them. By the way if Google catches you linking to sites that are not relevant to your site you will be penalized and lose ranking. This is how link exchanges work - people buy or sell links to anyone else regardless of relevancy. Stay clear of this.

Trading Links. Lots of sites that are relevant to your site will trade links with you. This is called a two way link. Don't bother as this won't help you much. The exception would be if the other site has a high page rank.

Writing Posts/Articles
Try for about 400 words. (Longer is also good but not necessary)
Use your Keywords a couple of times throughout the whole article.
Use your Keyword in the Blog Post Title
Use your Keyword in the first sentence.
Use your Keyword in the final sentence.
Try and Put your Keyword in Bold type at least once in the article - a sub headline is a good way to do this.
Put your link in the link field so that the post links back to your site.

The Order Google Crawls Your Page: Common Mistakes Bloggers Make

Excerpt from Grizzly's post "Common Mistakes Bloggers Make: Part 1":

Your blog title is the primary keyword(s) used by the search engines in deciding what your blog is about. Next in importance is your blog description and then comes your post title and finally your header titles.

If available you should also try and include your main keyword in your URL as well or some variation of it.

The bots that crawl your pages start at the top left corner and work down to the bottom right. Do not put anything irrelevant in the top left portion of your page as this is what is used to categorize your page for both indexing and adsense ads.

Google will index your page using your blog title followed by the first line of html text it sees. Make sure the first line of text is your page title. Make sure your page title contains the keyword you are trying to get traffic for. Make sure your page title is alluring enough to get people to visit as this is what they are presented in the SERP's. (Search Engine Results Pages) This may seem obvious to you but I have critiqued a number of blogs lately that have started their posts with sentences like "Thank you for coming to my site" or "Welcome to my blog" or "Part 2 in my continuing journey online". This is what gets indexed and people searching on the engines are not likely to click on these sites as they won't have a clue as to what these sites are about.

Your page Title and post title specifically is what Google uses to send you relevant adsense ads. If your blog is about cats and you use a post title like "Why dogs suck and cats don't" you will get ads for dogs, cats and pets in general. If your readers are cat lovers you won't get the best ads. The more you optimize your post title and post content the more Google optimizes the ads it sends you.

Let's say you start a blog called "Cats" and your first post is titled "Why I love Cats". Wonderful. Your post rambles on about all the reasons you love cats. So far you have told Google exactly what your blog is about and that your post is most likely about four legged cute little furry hairballs and not about a Broadway musical. You will get indexed for cats. You might get some traffic but not much. You will get adsense ads for cat related products... perhaps even for tickets to a musical. The problem is that your ads will be low paying and your traffic will be browsers - people out for a sunday drive. Why? You are far too general in content and this is not how to attract readers or how to get the best paying adsense ads.

You can use the blog title "Cats" but your post title must zero in on something specific about cats and then your post should expand on this theme. Try "Common Cat Diseases and Treatments" or "How to Maintain a Healthy Cat". By doing this you will draw a targeted audience and moreover you will get better targeted ads... ads that pay more and are more likely to be clicked on. Most marketers don't realize that Google rewards good quality sites with the best ads and sends low paying ads to poor content sites.

Setup your blog so that only one post shows per page. Your home page gets the bulk of your traffic. This is true for everyone and it tends to have the highest page rank. Bloggers tend to post several posts on their home pages usually in snippet form with a link to the full article on a separate page. The majority of ads clicked are on the home page and not on secondary pages. People reading further into your blog have found what they are looking for and aren't clicking on ads. People on your homepage have not found what they want and click your ads in hopes of better luck elsewhere. Blogs that use several posts on their homepage aren't optimized for adsense - too many subjects and post titles - the content is varied because the page contains several different subjects and the Google bot doesn't know what the page is about specifically. The end result is that the page will receive general ads based on the overall content of the blog and this means low paying ads.

I only post one article per page including the home page. Each page is optimized around one subject and Google sends me the most relevant ads which also pay the most. I don't get as many page views as regular bloggers but I do make more money from adsense.

Backlinks: Creative Ideas from Janet

Excerpt from Janet's post Make Money At Home With Backlinks:

We all know about GoArticles and Hubpages and Squidoo and your basic everyday blog comments, but what are some alternative ways to get backlinks that most make money at home people "in the know" don't talk about?

Make Money at Home with Backlinks Idea #1:

Create some Wordpress themes. This blog offers a good Wordpress tutorial to help you out if you've never done this before.

Why would you want to do this? Easy... People love free Wordpress themes and if you design a few nice but simple ones (especially if you name them according to some niche you are targeting: bankruptcy, gold investing, European travel, whatever.... so that it's searchable via Google and you get traffic) you will be putting a backlink to your blog in the footer. Most people don't delete these as it is proper etiquette to leave it in to credit the creator for their work. If lots of people use your themes, you will have lots of backlinks with no work beyond initially creating the themes.

Make Money at Home with Backlinks Idea #2:

If you have a purely informational site (that isn't monetized) that you plan to use for backlinks and it has some good, helpful content on it (not Adsense tweeked blog material) then try to find a related page in Wikipedia that you can edit and leave a reference to your informational blog or website. You cannot make it obvious that this is your blog or that you would directly benefit financially from the backlink (that's why it can't be a monetized site).

Make Money at Home with Backlinks Idea #3:

Get some .edu links. Easier said than done? Not really. If you downloaded the SEO for Firefox plug-in that I mentioned in my make money at home ebook, you have a very powerful tool right at your fingertips. Simply type in your main keyword for your niche to look-up where your competitors are getting their .edu backlinks from and how many they have. Look at this picture (click picture to enlarge):

Once you have completed your Google search (in this case, I searched for "make money online"), click on the part I circled that says "Y! .edu Page Links" to see where these people are getting .edu links from. When you click on that text, a page will come up with all the websites or blogs (it's usually blogs) where they left keyword anchored backlinks on. The funny thing is, the comments usually aren't even thoughtful. LOL. Just go to the blogs they went to and leave a comment for yourself with your keyword anchored properly like so:

Don't leave all your comments on the same day - space it out so it's not obvious.

This is the page that comes up when you click on the "Y! .edu Page Links" hyperlink (click picture to enlarge):

Just follow the links and start leaving comments.

Creating 2nd Tier Blogs: Janet's Bootcamp Step 2

Excerpt from Janet's Step 2:
The 2nd Step to make money at home step involves creating 2nd tier blogs with mediocre content and NO monetization methods on them. You will be linking your already indexed 1st tiers to your newly created 2nd tiers. Create as many as you'd like to or need to; this is not an exact science. If you're not sure, just create 20 or so. You can always go back and make more if you find you need them. Get started with that first 20 and see where it takes you.

I have over a thousand 2nd tiers linking out to my several hundred current 3rd tiers. This took me over two years of consistent, nearly daily work. Remember to take it one blog and one day at a time.

Get your 2nd tiers indexed by using backlinks from your 1st tiers, GoArticles submissions, forum signatures, blog comments, YouTube videos, and so on. Tip: keep all your make money at home information organized in spreadsheets.

2nd tiers are more general in topic than your 3rd tiers will be, so don't worry about these 2nd tiers ranking well in Google. You probably won't be making money at home with them. The only difference between these 2nd tiers and your 1st tiers (farms) is that the content on the 2nd tiers is of better quality. It needs to be legit and related to your niche topic in some way. The "real" niche blogs will be your 3rd tiers, so they are going to be very narrow in topic.

At this stage, you're not quite ready to make money at home yet, but you are covering some ground and building a foundation so that it goes much faster as you build your empire!

Setting Up Farms: Janet's Bootcamp Step 1

Janet (Nomad's Guide To Make Money Online) goes into more detail in her bootcamp.

Step 1: Setting Up Farms
Keywords to Start With: Start small so you don’t overwhelm yourself. Find 5 different but remotely related niches that you can start working on. Don’t work on more than 3 “green” keywords for each of the 5 at once.

Setting Up Farms: Start working on your 1st tier farms. Start with farms that have a general theme “travel”, “auto”, “home”, “health”, etc. I have hundreds of these, but you don't need hundreds to get started. Maybe you want to start out with 20 or so? Choose a number that you know you can accomplish and make sure to create the farms on different platforms (Blogger - if it's not auto generated content, Wordpress, Blogetery, Hubpages, Squidoo, Infobarrel, etc.) You will be able to reuse these for other backlinks (not Squidoo and Hubpages from my experience as they will probably delete the page) when you start new niche topic projects. The 1st tiers don’t need to be an exact match; therefore general, reusable farms are what we need. You will probably need to spend a month or 2 setting up, putting content on, and indexing your initial farms if you are starting from scratch to make money at home.

Squidoo - Questions & Answers

How do you set up multiple Squidoo pages and not get banned or caught? Since they need a paypal or other way to pay you, wouldn’t they catch on that numerous accounts are using the same payout address?

When To Ad Adsense to Your Blog

Vic on 02.04.2008 at 01:00 (Vic is endorsed by Grizzly)
I let my sites age before placing adsense and I believe it does make a difference the way Google looks at them.

Grizzly recommends waiting at least a month after getting indexed, before placing any ads on a site/blog.

Slash My Search & ZotSpot Review

A Blogspot Blogger reviews Two Search Engines You Can Make Money With. He recommends Slash My Search and ZotSpot, but I noticed that his link to Slash My Search which would pay him if you click on it and sign up with Slash My Search leads to a 404 error page. So I did a little research on Slash My Search and this is what I found:

Get Paid Online or Ripped Off: Slash My Search

Slash My Search - Has it paid you?

So I think I'll skip Slash My Search and I recommend you do the same.

Now let's check out ZotSpot. While John mentions ZotSpot, he doesn't include a link to ZotSpot. Wonder why? I guess cuz it doesn't pay him to refer others. So let's check it out and see if it's legit. I'm finding lots of "reviews" which are basically a description of what ZotSpot does, but I'm not finding anyone who is actually using it. My assessment? ZotSpot is not worth my time to go through setting it up. I'll try to revisit this in six months or so and see if I can find some reviews from actual users of their service.

I think I'll stick with Google's search box if I want to get paid when my readers search for information from one of my pages. Note to readers: I have Google's search box on several of my blogs but I don't think the link above is the correct link. The search boxes I have pay me when readers search for info anywhere on the Internet, not just on my pages. So if you find a better link to this Google app please add a comment.

Tech Ravings & Blog Doctor

Tech Ravings is a great resource for some of the background techie stuff you may run into, such as how to move a blog from Wordpress to Blogger, how to add meta tags to Blogger ...

The Blog Doctor is a treasure chest filled with pearls of blog-oriented wisdom. Check it out, you'll get lost browsing through the posts. Skip their SEO section. It looks to be written by someone who doesn't seem to know what they're talking about - as if I do (not).

Keywords: Choosing and Placing

From Grizzly's "Make Money Online For Beginners" website/blog Part 2 of Common mistakes bloggers who want to earn lots of money onlline make and how to fix them.

Excerpts from Part 2:

Let me use my blog as an example of how I target keywords using my blog title.

Now when I started this blog I chose to use "Make Money for Beginners" as my blog title and managed to get these terms for my URL as well. I didn't bother targeting "Make Money Online" at first as this would have been over reaching. When you start out pick keywords that can be attained in a short period of time. By attained I mean ranking on page 1 of the SERP's. I took over top spot for "Make Money for Beginners" in just over a month. This was relatively easy as there are only 2.5 million competing sites for this term. Are there a lot of searches for this term... not really, maybe 10 - 20 per week but it was a good starting point.

The term allowed me to add more keywords as I gained PR and something I call Google Bot Attraction. When I noticed I was getting crawled frequently, I changed my Blog title to "Make Money Online for Beginners". Within a few days I found that I went from page 3 for the term all the way to top spot on page 1 on Google. I also held onto top spot for the previous term "Make Money for Beginners". Pretty cool I thought. I recently added the words "How to" to my title and sure enough I got top spot the following day for "How to Make Money Online for Beginners" as well. Now I can't say that I get a ton of traffic for these exact terms as most people don't add "for Beginners" to the query. However by adding the "Online" and "How to" terms I noticed that my blog moved up drastically in the SERP's for the terms "How to Make Money Online" and "Make Money Online" which are both found in my Title.

The point of all this is to plan things out when starting your blog. Pick your primary keyword and then use "long tail" keywords that compliment your primary keyword as a starting point. As more and more of your long tails' get indexed and achieve high ranking they boost your primary keyword ranking in the process and more importantly bring in traffic for secondary keywords related to your niche.

The best way to bolster your Blog title and your primary keyword is the often overlooked "blog description" area. With websites this is contained in the Meta Tags and it is now ignored by Google and a few other search engines thanks to keyword stuffing abusers. It is not ignored on blogspot blogs however and is a powerful aid for getting your secondary keywords ranked.

I change mine all the time when I want Google to rank me higher for recent popular searches. My Blog Title tells Google that in general this blog is about how to make money online. My description tells Google the specifics of how this is done. When I find popular subjects like "Project Payday" or "Yahoo Answers" I quickly do a little research, write a few posts and then change my description to let Google know that I cover these popular subjects and more importantly I let searchers know it too as my description is displayed in the SERP's. This works like a charm and gets me ranked well for just about any topic I choose. A word of caution though. Each time you make a change there is a delay of a few days to a week where you will see a drop in traffic as Google drops your rankings for previous terms that you have removed from your description. It usually takes a good week before your new terms are indexed and start drawing traffic.

Helping Others Make Money Online

Grizzly shares one of the make money online gurus secrets - helping others. I haven't even finished reading his article but I had to post this link so you could have access to it too.

More Google Tips & SEO Tricks

Grizzly gives us more good information with "More Google Tips and SEO Tricks" and here are some excerpts:

A perfect link is one that is part of the text on a page, on a site that has both high Page Rank and has been around a year or longer and the linking anchor text (wording in the link) is perfectly optimized for your sites keywords.

How to get the Perfect BackLink?
Articles, articles and more articles. You write articles with your embedded anchor text link in it and other sites like what they see, feel their readers will find the article useful and they will post it on their site. Simple.

Some Black Hat Tips
Until you know what you are doing never black hat a site that you have Google Adsense ads on. You do not want Google to ban you. This will take away the easiest source of income on the net.

Don't black hat a site that has a good PR. It's not worth losing your PR to save a little time.

Negative Reviews
I target every new product with a review. There are lots of review sites out there, but how many reviews do you read that are real reviews and not just affiliates selling the product under the guise of a review? Not many.

Google likes review sites. Google likes Blogs. Google really likes blogs that have reviews. People looking to buy stuff like reading reviews before buying. The first page of the SERP's list all the most relevant sites for a particular query. There is always 1 site with a negative review on the first page and it makes the front page regardless of its PR. You will also usually find a site selling something related to the review product, again regardless of PR - normally some book from Amazon. You will also notice that one of the sites might be an alternate media site (a video site like youtube) which again makes the front page without any PR. Why?

The reason is that Google wants the person who is doing the search to have as many options as possible concerning their query. The person asked for a review of a product. Would Google be providing the reader with all the facts if they only listed the top ten PR sites who all happen to be in favour of the product.

Because this program is popular I had a lot of negative review competitors to beat out for that spot on page 1. I did this with a little trick and using some other sites I own. First I linked a couple of PR3 sites to my post to give the page some credibility and then I keyword stuffed this blog page.

A few days back I listed all the keywords that people have used that culminated with them finding my site. I put this all together at the bottom of my page and waited for the Google Bot. Once my page was indexed by Google I removed all the keywords and waited for what years of experimenting told me would happen.

The next day I received the most visitors ever and made the most adsense revenue since I started this blog.

The reason is simple. Google will look at your page and figure out what it thinks you are about based on your keywords. A normal page using our example above would use the term Roadmap to Riches as the main keyword and will get traffic from people searching for that specific term. They won't rank as high for a misspelled term or for any other version of the query like Road Map to Riches or Road to Rich etc. A site that has every misspelling and every variation or at least lots of variations will get traffic from everybody and not just the people who typed in the correct phrase.

Once indexed I started getting tons of traffic because Google figured I was not only a negative review site in a sea of affiliate sites but I also had so many variations of the main keyword that my site just had to have something for everyone searching for Roadmap to Riches info. Bang I was in position 3 on page 1 overnight.

My adsense revenue increased partly because of the increase in visitors but mostly because the searcher couldn't find what they were looking for. People who found me using "ROADMAP TO RICHES +FORUM" quickly found out that I wasn't a forum but my adsense ads were full of Roadmap to Riches ads that they clicked on hoping to find what they were looking for in the first place. The fact that I had removed the stuffed keyword text by the time they found my site would have left them baffled as to why Google would index me for their particular search as none of the keywords remained on my pages.

This is black hatting. I only did it to show you how black hatters can manipulate Google and make money in the process. Before you try this let me warn you about a few things.

Google can usually tell when a site is stuffed with keywords and will penalize you for it. If you use a keyword more than 3 0r 4 times for every 100 words of text then you are seen as stuffing.

Normally I would never do something like this on a white hat blog like this. I do this to niche sites all the time. If my site is about Black Labrador Dogs and I see that cocker spaniels are suddenly getting lots of searches I will stuff my Black Lab page full of cocker spaniel keywords ( surrounded by tons of other text ), wait until google indexes me and then delete all the spaniel references except the Title and a few well placed keywords. Along come some visitors who can't find what they were looking for who then click the adsense ads which are showing cocker spaniel ads and voila - instant money.

Note: Your post title is the single biggest determining factor in what ads google places on your site. If it can't get a good idea of what your post is really about then it will use the keywords in your title. This is why you have different ads on different pages of the same blog. The ads are not blog specific - they are page specific.

To get the cocker spaniel ads I just call the post "Cocker Spaniels" and then proceed to talk about Black Labs for the rest of the post except to throw the Cocker Spaniel keyword into the first paragraph and the last sentence of the post. I also make sure not to use any other defining keywords more than once or twice. I don't want google to know what the page is about so that they give me ads based on my title.

I am not saying that the post is unreadable - it is - I never use content generated by machines. If a snooping Google employee was to read my post they would see a perfectly fine post about why I like Black Labs more than I like Cocker Spaniels. I just happened to optimize the post for Cocker Spaniels when I should have used Black Labs more in my keyword selection. A reader would not see a spam post, just a post that they thought was going to talk about Cocker Spaniels and does a little but not enough to satisfy their interest... wait look, this adsense ad might just be the ticket.

And that is how black hatting is done tactfully.

Why Content Really is King

This post by Grizzly of "Making Money Online" fame is about how to set up your new blog to make money online. It's titled "Why Article Content Really is King".

Excerpts from Grizzly's post:

Create your blog using your main keyword in your Title.

Have an "about me" section which gives your name, address and contact info. This makes you more credible. The more info you give the better although most people do not want to do this. This is not mandatory as you won't be penalized for not doing it. You will rank better if you do is all.

Write your first post using your main keyword in the post Title, the first paragraph and use it again in the last sentence of the post.

Link the post Title back to your blog.

Don't over use your keyword in the main content of your post but try and use 5 or 6 related keywords a couple of times each throughout your post. If you are talking about "Fishing Recipes" then use related terms like "trout", "perch", "bass" and so on in your text. Example: if you are trying to get ranked for "Car Insurance" and all you write about in your content is "Car Insurance" then you will get categorized under "Car Insurance" and ranked about 2 million. If you mention several models and makes of cars in your post and several types of insurance plans available then you will get categorized for not only "car Insurance" but for all the more specific terms as well. It is these specific terms that will get higher rankings and all of them will boost your main keyword's ranking in the process.

Each new post should have your blog's main keyword in it but you want to write each new post on a specific sub topic of your main keyword. If my blog's main keyword is "Fishing Recipes" then each page will concentrate on a different fish and recipe. In time you will build up your main keyword while getting indexed for highly specific or targeted sub keywords or "long tails" as they are known.

Post at least three times a week for the first two months.

Do not add adsense or advertising or affiliate products to your blog for at least a month after getting indexed. I have tested this extensively and can say without a doubt that you will always rank higher without monetization.

That's it for on page SEO

Now for off page SEO.

Get indexed.

Don't bother submitting your site to the search engines or directories. Waste of time.

I use a link from a PR7 site to get indexed immediately. Most of you won't have this option so do the next best thing. Put your link on a high PR site, by submitting an article to ezine (PR6). You can also set up a page (lens) on Squidoo for the same results.

Submitting to Propeller (formerly netscape) also works.

Writing Articles:
For each post on your blog you should write 2 to 3 similar but not duplicate articles emphasizing the same keywords and submit them to different article directories. Start with ezine and GoArticles. There are hundreds of article directories out there. Use the highest PR sites first. Each time your article is picked up and posted on someone else's site you get a little link juice back to your blog. Make your articles useful and compelling so that people will want to use them for their own readers.

Put your link in the Author's box and in the first sentence of the article using your keyword as the anchor text.

It appears that the more exhaustive I am the better. I tend to write long and extensive articles. Most bloggers write snippets. From Google's point of view, who gives the most information? - a 250 word article on a single topic or a 3000 word article on the same topic but also includes info on relevant topics. Keep your reader in mind. The reader wants info but doesn't want to spend all week reading it. There is a fine balance to be had between giving lots of info and too much info.

How to Set Up a Blog on Blogger

Here's the link to Lesson 1 of 5 lessons written by Grizzly of "Making Money Online" or "Make Money For Beginners" fame. Lesson 1 is all about how to set up your first blog on Blogger. It goes through every detail, step by step.

I encourage you to read through all five lessons before getting started. One warning, Grizzly tells you how to add Adsense to your blog, but you don't want to actually do it until you get your blog to rise in the SERP's. Just for fun though, you can add it to see if the Adsense ads are relevant, but then take it off immediately. You'll rank better without the Adsense at first and you can add it when you get to where you want to be in the SERP's.

Excert from Grizzly's Lesson 1:

Let's start with "Google Adsense" and Blogs.

This is the cheapest and fastest way to get started making money online. You can set up a blog for free. Google will provide advertisements for your blog for free. You will earn an immediate commission from Google each time some one clicks an advertisement on your blog. Once you get your blog up and running you can diversify with affiliate marketing and other methods of making money. A blog is very simple to manage. The new Blogger (just out of Beta) program (owned by Google) is a beginners dream as a complete computer illiterate can set up a blog just following the onscreen directions. Once you have a blog you will then learn how to market it - get traffic to your site. When you have learned how to do this you can transfer this knowledge to websites and other online ventures. A blog will teach you the basics and you can learn without spending gobs of cash in the process.

I'm sure you have seen screenshots of people who are making hundreds of dollars a day from adsense. Is this bullsh*t? Nope. They earn what they say but beware that they are not telling you the whole story.

There are several strategies for making money with Google Adsense but let's look at the two most common.

1)Using Adwords or other paid advertising to generate traffic to your Adsense sites and hence generate Adsense clicks.

2) Getting free traffic using SEO techniques (Search Engine Optimization) and harnessing the power of multiple Blogs to generate Adsense revenue.

So what is the trick?

Using Adwords

This is what they don't tell you.

A lot of those screen shots show you the money they brought in. They never tell you how much they spent to earn that income. They may make $600 a day but if they are using adwords to generate traffic then they likely spent several hundred a day as well. They always show you the gross, not the net. This doesn't mean that they aren't making a profit - they are or they wouldn't continue day after day - but that their profit is a lot less than they lead you to believe. This is done in order to make you believe that the product they are selling will help you generate profits of $600 a day. If they were completely honest they would admit that it might generate SALES of $600 a day - not PROFITS.

Using free traffic

This is what they don't tell you.

This is the best way for a beginner to start out. Build a blog on a particular niche(topic), create good quality content for it, have Google index and rank your page high for your keyword (topic) and sit back as Google sends hordes of visitors to your site. Finally, count your money from all the Adsense clicks. Right? Well almost.

This is the procedure but they don't tell you that to make serious money at this you will need to create dozens of blogs. Yes, you heard right. Your main blogs will have decent pages addressing the needs of your visitors and suitable for marketing products. The majority of the blogs however, will be set up to simply generate Adsense clicks. The articles will be unique but crappy and visitors that end up on these blogs will quickly leave - hopefully by clicking an ad that will take them to where they were trying to go in the first place. This is called spam blogging and as unethical as it seems, it is how many people make a lot of money with Adsense. No one talks about this aspect of making adsense profits. No one wants to admit that they use this tactic and yet this is the main method of generating decent money with Adsense with out spending money to get traffic.

This is also the system (modified a bit) that I recommend to all beginners. It's the cheapest way to start earning cash, it will teach you all the main aspects of Internet marketing and you can start immediately. However, you will have to decide if ethics or making money is your top priority first.

Decided?

Let's begin.

We will keep this simple to start. In future posts I will explain more and more techniques as we go. For now we need to get a few blogs set up.

Go to Blogger.com and set up your account.

When you have completed this we can begin.

Before creating your blog you will have to find a topic. This is called a niche. There is a lot to learn about finding the right niche but for now just pick a topic you like. Let's learn how to set up a blog before we worry about what kind of blog will make money.

I will set up a new blog with you so you can see how I do it.

In blogger select Create Account.

Select a name. Try and use your keyword in the name and the blog address. (Use Capitals in your name but only lower-case in blog address.)

ie. I want to call my blog "Blogger Basics for Beginners" using the following address "http://bloggerbasics.blogspot.com". When I checked the availability I was told this address was already taken.

When this happens try using a dash like this;
"http://blogger-basics.blogspot.com" - notice the dash, this is a way to still use your main keyword by adding a dash between them. As it happens this address is also taken.

Next I try this;

"http://beginner-blogger-basics.blogspot.com" - This address is available and I am still able to use my keyword in the address and my title which is "Blogger Basics for Beginners".

Note: The more popular the niche the harder it will be to get an address for your keyword. If you are doing a "shoe" blog I can assure you that all possible "shoe" combination's are gone. If you are using "Pre-Cambrian Rock Formations" as a keyword you can probably get it for your address.

It is important to use your keyword in your Blog's Title and Address. This will greatly help you when it comes to search engine rankings and indexing. This is a big topic that I won't get into right now - just trust me on this.

Fill in the word verification and hit continue.

Note: The reason for the word verification is to stop automated programs from setting up thousands of blogs. Basically it is there to stop you from doing what I am going to show you how to do. Don't worry, it doesn't stop the automated programs, they have evolved to take this delay in hand and let you work around it.

March 2008: Update. It now appears that Blogger has a new flagging system that can catch most auto-software trying to set up multiple accounts. As you can no longer use link farms effectively this is a moot point and you should only be creating 3-4 blogs per account. Do not use the same keywords in each blog. ie. Don't create related blogs in each account. If you want ten blogs targeted to 1 niche then put each blog on a separate account.

You will now be asked to select a template. Later you can experiment with all the different templates but for now just choose Minima as you will find it easier to follow along with me. (It is the first choice and it should already be selected automatically) I have found this to be the most professional looking template and I use it frequently. You are reading this post on a Minima template. It is also perfectly optimized for SEO without having to tweak it.

Hit continue to select the Minima Template.

Next you will see a page that says "Your Blog has been created".

That's all there is to it.

Hit "Start Posting" and we will begin the next step.

Before posting let's go into "Settings" and make a few customizations.

Fill in your description. Make sure you use your keyword at least once in your description. (Update - see Common Blogging Mistakes and Common Blogging Mistakes - Part 2 for more details)

After your description scroll down the page and hit "Save Settings". Don't change any of the yes/no settings. Leave them on default.

Select the "Publishing" tab.

Select "Yes" where it says "Notify Webogs.com" and hit "Save Settings" (the default is NO) This will help notify the outside world each time you post something to your blog.

Select "Formatting"

Change "Show" to 1 posts on the main page. (Default is 7)

Select your time zone.

Set "Show Link Field" to Yes.

Leave everything else as is and hit "Save Settings".

Select "Comments"

Select "Show" for Backlinks.

Select "Yes" for Pop up Window.

Select "No" for Word Verification.

Enter your email for comment notification.

Hit "Save Settings", and leave the rest of the options on default.

Select "Archiving"

Make sure the frequency is set to "Monthly" and the "Enable Post Pages?" is set to "Yes".

Hit "Save Settings"

Select "Posting" and we are ready for your first post.

You will notice that you have a Title Field, a Link Field, and a big box where you will type in your post.

It is important that each and every title you use has a keyword (a term you want to rank for) in the Title. (Again this relates to SEO - and again just trust me without further explanation at this point.)

In the link field you want to type in your blog address so that the post links back to your blog (your home page or the post page).

My link is typed as follows; http://beginner-blogger-basics.blogspot.com/ - this is the URL of my homepage.

Replace beginner-blogger-basics with your address.

My first post is short and to the point. It will mention my keywords at least twice.

It reads as follows;

Welcome to Blogger Basics for Beginners. This site provides tips and techniques for beginning bloggers in order to make money online. If you have questions not covered in Blogger Basics please feel free to email your question to bla bla bla

Make your first post the same way. Use your keywords a couple of times and then hit "Publish".

Then hit "View Blog"

Congrats - you are now a blogger. Simple wasn't it?

Now you can customize your blog. You will notice that your title is a hypertext link pointing to your site. On the right hand side of the page is a section called "Blog Archive" and below that is an "About Me" section.

You can add and remove any section you like by selecting "Customize" from the top right corner of your screen.

I am going to remove the "About Me" section and add a new section for Adsense. Always leave the "Blog Archives" so that visitors can find your previous posts.

Select "Customize"

Click the edit link on the "About Me" box. I am going to select the "Remove Page Element" option to get rid of this but if you want to keep the "About Me" section just fill in the info boxes and click "Save Changes".

Let's Add a Page Element. From the main customization screen click the link that says "Add a Page Element" (Use the right hand column box - not the one on the bottom of the page.)

You will get a pop-up screen with a lot of Page Elements listed on it.

Let's add Adsense to our blogs. Click the Adsense "Add to Blog" button. If you don't have an Adsense account follow the instructions to get one. You will get a publisher ID from Google that will enable you to post adsense ads on your blog. Once you have this pick a Format and use the Blend Template option regarding colors. (it's the default).

Update: Note - if you want to use adsense channels to track your blogs then you will have to create your Adsense code in Adsense Setup in your Adsense account and then copy/paste the code generated into your blog manually. Don't use the "Adsense" element for this - use the "HTML/JavaScript" element and paste in the code after the box opens.

Update: As of February 2008, Google requires all blogs using Adsense to post a Privacy Policy on their blogs. To see what this entails view mine in the sidebar A Very Boring Privacy Policy"

For right hand column ads I stick to the 160 x 600 vertical Banner Format.

Click "Save Changes" and you will notice that an Adsense box has been added to your right hand column at the top.

Click "View Blog" and see the results.

It takes a little while for Google to recognize your content and place corresponding ads on your site. At first you may only see public service ads or nothing until Google figures out your keywords. Just be patient as this is normal. Having said that, I was given ads related to Blogs/Make Money immediately and you may have got appropriate ads as well if you followed my instructions. Why? Remember I told you to use your keywords several times in setting up your blog. I did this so that the Google bot will have no problem figuring out what your blog is about. If your keyword is about something that has advertisements Google will find the ads. If you used the "Pre-Cambrian" keyword you may never get anything but public service ads as I doubt that there are many advertisers selling anything related to this keyword... I could be wrong though.

Let's stop for today and let you concentrate on the next lesson. You will have to sit down and write one decent article about your keyword. (I can hear you non-writers cringing at the thought) Later I will show you how to get unique content without writing your own but for now you will have to bare down and do a little typing.

Before leaving go to my just created Blog Blogger Basics For Beginners and make sure that yours is set up like mine.

PS. Don't be afraid to add and delete elements/Widgets on your blog in the meantime. Play around and learn how to use the Page elements. You can also edit the Blog's type, fonts, colors and element positions. Experiment a bit. Just don't delete your initial post.
